True Confession

When I was growing up, the TV show Beverly Hills 90210 was hugely popular. I never saw a single episode. It's not really my thing. The high drama of beautiful, rich, alcoholic teenagers (portrayed by 20-somethings) doesn't interest me. (Ugly teenagers are a different matter entirely.) I've also never seen episodes of Dawson's Creek, The O.C., or Party of Five. Or at least I hadn't until Friday. Someone donated seasons of The O.C. and Dawson's Creek to the Library, and my co-worker who does our A/V collection development offered to send me home with them, because, well, I'm not sure why she offered them to me. She usually places literary adaptations, foreign films, and romantic comedies set in London in my hands. I accepted her offer of The O.C., though, because Adam Brody reminds me of Dexter in Sarah Dessen's novel This Lullaby, and Dexter is one of my favorite fictional characters.

It was my weekend to supervise the library, so I got home on Friday night around 9:30 and needed to be back at work in less than 12 hours. Closing the library is always a little stressful, because no one wants to leave. (When I'm really stressed out--about anything, not just work--I dream that I'm trying to close the library, but the patrons won't leave and people keep entering the building and the phones are disconnected so I can't call for help.) By the time I get home, I'm usually a little grumpy, because I've practically had to wrench magazines out of patrons' hands or drag them from their computer terminals and personally escort them out the door while they call out, Hey, are those tax forms? Do you have any movies set in China? I just remembered I need to grab a book for my wife. I just need to check one quick thing in the atlas. Don't make me gooooo! The public displeases me when the library is closing. So, I'm saying that when I got home I needed to unwind a little.

So I watched The O.C. Until 3:00 a.m. At first I disliked it. I kept thinking that in all my years working with the incarcerated (over 5), I've never seen such an attractive and polite and well-spoken juvenile offender as Ryan Atwood (played by Ben McKenzie). But Ben McKenzie's actually a good actor. And kind of dreamy (he's so totally making the imaginary boyfriend list). And Adam Brody still reminds me of Dexter. And (I'm so embarrassed) I started to be deeply interested in the plot.

I feel like I need to go read some Foucault or Nietzsche to counteract the pejorative effects of immersing myself in pretty people programming. But first I have to finish watching every. single. episode. And the commentaries. And all the bonus features. It's like a sickness.

Yeah, I can empathize. One time I got home from a date and it was already late. But my sister was watching a reality show on MTV called "Battle of the Sexes." I only intended to watch a little... but before I know it, I'm all wrapped up in the DRAMA. Unfortunately, it was a marathon of the show and I ended up watching it with her until 5:00 a.m. I'm so ashamed!

Ben McKenzie didn't make it onto my Imaginary Boyfriend List until I watched Junebug, where he plays an inconsiderate, white trash jerk. Go figure. [I blame the meerkat scene.]

I admit I watched a couple of episodes of the OC because of Adam Brody, who was Lane's boyfriend for a while on Gilmore Girls. He was extremely funny, or at least the character he played was. I admit I wasn't as interested in Gilmore Girls after he left. And he wasn't as funny on the OC which is what I discovered after watching the couple of episodes I did.

oh, mbc, this kind of thing happens to the best of us at times.

Now I invite you to watch Wonderfalls so you can lose even more time. But I promise it has some brainy moments. :)

I agree with Rebekah, it does happen to the best of us. My sister and I were 90210 AND Party of 5 addicts in high school and my dad would shake his head and be like, "You girls and your night-time soap operas!" I never really got into the O.C. but I have a few shows I am currently addicted to that I don't need to admit to you on here. Oh, and TV shows on DVD are the white devil slavemaster. Let me tell you, I decided I needed to watch Alias because I LOVE everything else that J.J. Abrhams produced (Felicity specifically) so I ordered the DVDs through Net Flix. When I started a DVD I could NOT stop watching. Suddenly 3 1/2 hours had passed and I was like a rabid dog waiting for the next DVD to arrive. Pure evil!!!

The OC is highly addicting. My hometeacher let my roommate and I borrow and we watched non stop until most of the first season was over and we had to give it back. Oh how I love Ben! Felicity is also another highly addicting show I didn't watch until it was on dvd. Now I understand why all those people were addicted to it in college.

Annie is correct about DVDs of shows, particularly ALIAS. But I am still impressed that you made such a true confession MBC...I once watched THE REAL WORLD for a whole weekend. I will always know that you have a weakness and will think of ways to exploit it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one prone to these addictions and that Ben is getting the appropriate admiration he deserves. Annie is too right about series on DVD, but, Rebekah, I don't want to be one of the blognoramuses.

Kirsten--I LOVED Adam Brody on Gilmore Girls, especially this one.

I'm going to go watch Ben brood now. He's very good at brooding.

Wow. I just. It's like I don't know you.

Confession: I have avoided the OC because I know I'll develop a major raging Adam Brody crush and I really just don't have the emotional resources to go there right now.

I was prepared to fend off an Adam Brody crush, but I did not see the Ben McKenzie coming.

Why am I reading your old blog posts when there is laundry to be done? I have this thing about making comments... Anyway I am also a huge fan of the O.C. Only for Adam Brody though. He's so great funny! I bought the entire series while I was on mat leave with Cali. That is what mat leave is all about... catching up on T.V.
