Tell Me Where to Go

I'm going to Portland next week. I've never been to Oregon before. Anybody have any recommendations?

Here's my recommendation for the night. When attending a BBQ, DO NOT eat the burger AND the fajita AND the salmon. You might want everyone cooking to feel appreciated, but eating that much food will just make you want to vomit and you'll end up blogging while lying on the floor and moaning, which is hard to do. Learn from my folly.

1. GO to the rose garden. Its free, its beautiful, and from the top of the garden, on a clear day, you can see Portland and Mt. Hood. Its a test garden, (Portland is called Rose City, or something about roses) and they test new breeds. Take a picnic.
2. Go to the Japanese Garden. Its only a few minutes from the rose gardens, they're all within Washington Park, along with the zoo, the children's museum, the arboretum and more. The Japanese Garden isn't free, but absolutely worth the entrance fee.
3. Go to Powell's. Hopefully, that is a foregone conclusion. Its the biggest independent booksellers west of the Mississippi. Blocks of new and used books. Heaven!
4. Any farmer's market in the area.

There is another BIG market, not a farmer's market, but an arts and crafts, international foods, live music, and the most interesting people Portland has to offer. Its held by the waterfront, I'm not sure what day. I assume its on Saturday, you should be able to find it on line. It would be a 15-20 minute walk from Powell's.
Have fun! We're having great weather right now!

I have only driven through Portland, literally! So not much advice there.

But how do you know it would be hard to blog in that condition? :)

Dine and I stayed in Portland one night. We went to the old city and walked the street there. Many independant resturaunts and interesting little stores. For what it is worth

On No Reservations on the Travel Channel, Anthony Bourdain went to this place in Portland called Voodoo Doughnut where they have doughnuts with bacon on them. I desparately want to go there. Upon further research, I discovered that it is a doughnut shop/wedding chapel. Coolness.

I hear you about eating too much. . . I did the same thing and sat and moaned all night!
