the one about Steve

1. Steve is here (hooray!) for the holidays.
2. I prevailed in convincing my father that I am old enough and capable enough to pick up Steve at the airport without assistance.

Dad: (For the 85 millionth time) Do you know the route I take to the airport?
MBC: Yes. You take the Parkway.
Dad: And how do I get to the Parkway?
MBC: You take the Pike (except I didn't say Pike because no one calls it that except for Marmot Dad and actually I laughed really hard before providing this answer, because I have driven on that parkway a million billion times, so it was really such a worried father kind of question).
Dad: It's supposed to rain. I'm a really good driver in the rain.

3. Steve read a quote in Sunday School today. He has a really lovely voice and a great accent and after he read his quote, the teacher stopped and said, "Wow. Okay, I think we should have him read all the quotes, because that was awesome!"
4. Tomorrow we're going to get a Christmas tree and the Christmas season will officially commence.

I am glad you were safe and able to name the roads you drove on. Have fun and make Steve tell you lots of things in his voice.

Hahaha, did he speak in his weird "Irish" sounding accent that he gets sometimes? Or was it just his Nova Scotian accent? I never realized that it's sooo different, but I guess it is to most Americans. Good times! You kids have fun... :-) Merry Christmas friends.

P.S. Tell Steve that I ran into Julius at Poundland today, and we were both giggling with glee at knowing that Steve was off in Tennessee visiting his girlfriend... there might have been clapping involved as well.

I am glad that Steve got there safely. I am sure that you can drive fine the rain :) Are you getting a REAL tree? Mom will be so happy to hear that!

This is a damn fine post ... primarily because of the evidence it offers of my hugely influential sway over your customary Farragutterance "Kingston Pike," which is MONUMENTAL overkill in the syllable-count department ... given the fact that there is NO OTHER PIKE in the near vicinity, and hence, "The Pike" does indeed suffice for all practical intents and purposes, and my sway over you is complete! It took a few years, though.

Ha! I love that you had to convince your father to let you go pick up Steve. Maybe he knows that Steve is secretly an elf (the nice kind, not the Holly Block/black/can't recall her name kind) and thus carries the intrinsic risk of magically transporting those around him off to some fairyland where all the roads are called pikes.

And yes, men with lovely accents should always read the quotes in Sunday School.

Eliana--Oh, yes, he always has lots of things to tell me in his voice.

Becky--Just the Nova Scotian. It's very different compared to the local accent.

Meg--A real tree is essential at Christmas! We didn't manage to get one yesterday, though, so we'll have to try harder to get to that done today.

Marmot Dad--I can see that I should have not used the term "the Pike." It has filled you with unhealthy pride and brought cursing to my blog. (And we never call it that.)

Chou--That's a most fascinating hypothesis.

I wanted to say something about Steve, but all I can come up with is

Steve . . . makin' copies.

I think that you should put some pictures of you and the infamous Steve on your blog, even if the eyes have to get blacked out :)

erratum ... please read "darn" for "d---"

One ought to watch one's intensifiers. (Which makes me wonder, is "Kingston" an intensifier?)

E--That reference is just barely out of my reach. I know I know it and yet . . .

Anon--I'll see what I can do. I think there's currently only one photo in the world of the two of us together.

Marmot Dad--Definitely NOT an intensifier. In your town, I believe there's only one avenue and yet no one calls it the Avenue, now do they?

Can Steve do a podcast for your blog, so we can all enjoy his accent?

I've never called it the Avenue, but that's not a bad idea at all. If I were thoroughly American at heart, I'd do better yet, shortening it to "The Av." It's a usage that might quickly become my fave.
