Steve's been out of town for a few days, and you know what that means. Yes, it means that I have had complete control over the breakfast oatmeal production for the last two mornings.
Steve and I both love oatmeal for breakfast, but we fix it differently. I fix it correctly and Steve does not. I like the oatmeal to look and taste like oatmeal. Steve likes it to look and taste like library paste. He claims it's not done properly until his spoon stands up in the oatmeal unassisted. All good scouts know this, apparently.
Fortunately, the most common form of oatmeal in Scotland is steel-cut, which can be cooked so that it satisfies both of us.
My parents have a similar disagreement over buckwheat pancakes. Dad likes them flat and dense. Mom likes them fluffy. Sadly, neither of them realizes that buckwheat pancakes are gross no matter how you fix them.
And there's the classic disagreement the world over regarding Cream of Wheat - smooth or lumpy? Correct answer: COLD and lumpy. Ahhh, yeah.

The appropriate viscosity of oatmeal and cracked wheat cereal is also an area of disagreement in my marriage. I like both pretty thick, with a glass of milk on the side. Cream of Wheat can be either smooth or lumpy, because it should only be used to bind books. It should never be eaten. (The texture of tofu also completely repulses me.)
haha!!! I think I'll go with your version of porridge. Now, cream of wheat could be either, but it HAS to have a decent skin! :D nothing is yummier than that, with some syrup (sugar beet version) drizzled over...
I shouldn't have read this in the morning, because all of these things are revolting. I shudder.
I agree that Cream of Wheat should not be consumed. Smells and looks like the paste I used in High School on stage sets.
I like thick oatmeal with yogurt stirred in to make it creamy but not soupy.
cold and lumpy. Blech. I like my cream of wheat warm and milky with sugar and butter.

I love lumps!
The ONLY cooked breakfast that should be lumpy is ___. That's right none. Your parents and your in-laws are in complete agreement on the subject of buckwheat pancakes. Your oatmeal tastes are fairly typical of most couples. Men like it semi-solid ladies like it more fluid. The reason is as all men know the firmer the oatmeal the more milk and sugar it will absorb, hence making it taste less and less like oatmeal.

Cream of Wheat=YUCK!
With this post, you are treading on sensibilities so delicate and tender that I can scarcely speak, and the tears are welling up.

KWB offers significant insight into the culinary gender gap. Noted.
I can't believe there are so many Cream of Wheat haters! It's such an inoffensive little breakfast cereal. They serve a thin version of it here for dessert. It's THAT good.
