A New Year

Rebekah (at least last year and this year) selected a word to embody her theme for the year. This year it's work and last year it was fortitude. I really like the idea of having a theme for the year. I've celebrate the months since sometime in graduate school, but the theme of a month is just as likely to be The Month of Watching British TV or The Month of Openly Despising Library Patrons as Well as Privately Harboring Feelings of Disdain for Them as not. They're not always inspiring months. But, occasionally, when the month's theme is actually something positive, like the Month of Kindness, I find myself murmuring, Kindness costs you nothing, as I tell someone, AGAIN, that www.johndoe.com is not his email address and I try a little harder. So, this year I'm embracing Rebekah's idea.

I love Westminster Abbey. It's one of my favorite places in all the world. It's so historically significant and soulful. I love memorials, particularly cemeteries, and Westminster is all about remembering and commemorating lives. I dig it. Anyway, the first time I went there, I stumbled across a tomb engraved with an epitaph stating that the man inside had become "more faithful than fearful." I love that. I would love to be more faithful than fearful, and I'm going to work on that this year. That's my theme.

That is a beautiful theme and a perfect one for this year: the headlines could easily inspire a lot of fear.

You are such a good person sometimes. How on earth did you ever survive living with me? Now I will have to think about a theme for the year.

I'm can't get past The Month of Openly Despising Library Patrons as Well as Privately Harboring Feelings of Disdain for Them. I might expand from patrons to people and voila! I have a theme for the year!

Heidi--Yes, I love the month themes, too.

Ann-Marie--Steal away!

Maren--It's true that it's an easy time to fear, but I prefer to be hopeful.

Eliana--Did you notice the part where I 'fessed up to my feelings toward the public I serve? And you were lovely to live with. I miss your $1 bets in church.

Amy--It's an easy theme to fulfill. Good luck with that.
