The Pertinent Facts of My Evening

It's a good thing that AJ is smelling impaired, because I have filled our house with the stench of brussels sprouts. I discovered a good recipe for them and they are delicious. I just got back from a meeting, though, (a 2 hour meeting) and the house still smells all sprouty. My meeting was at a neighbor's house and I couldn't find the neighbor's address and I haaaate the phone, so I decided I would just go to the neighbor's street, pick a house, knock on that door and hope for the best. Because it is better to knock on a stranger's door and ask them if they know where the correct home is than it is to make a phone call to my neighbor and ask her for her address. Really. I also discovered today that when I do my special workout hair (two tiny, sprouty pony tails and a headband), there's no recovery from that without a shower. A hat will be absolutely necessary to attend a meeting after sporting workout hair.

My father served a mission in Scotland and ate many brussels sprouts during his two years there. As you may know, Scotland is in Great Britain where all vegetables must be boiled until they are white. Brussels sprouts were not permitted in my childhood home, for obvious reasons. I don't think I ever tasted one until I was twenty. I should probably try your recipe.

I just want to see that workout hair do - sounds lovely. You should post a photo of it!

CSIowa--I had okra cooked that way in my school cafeteria and didn't realize until I had it fixed another way that I actually like okra. I just slice up my brussels sprouts thin and saute them with garlic and a little sugar in chicken broth. A minute or two before they're tender, I toss in a little salt and pecans or walnuts to toast up with them.

James--Nah. You can just cover that post-workout smell with the fragrance of cooked brussels sprouts.

Maren--Oh, yeah. It's lovely. Almost as good as my super hiker hairdo.

I am making brussel sprouts tonight and am SO excited. (Got some at Sunflower Farmer's Market for 99 cents a pound.) I use this recipe from 101 Cookbooks. Amazing stuff.

I agree with the telephone thing. I've had my cell phone off all week and don't even miss it! We should do everything that we can to avoid using the phone. Preferred methods include talking to someone in person, e-mail, sending the message with a little child, smoke signals or using Morse Code.

I think you and I must have the same workout hairstyle. It's pretty sexy.

My roommate cooks terrible things all the time as well, leaving smells that linger in the apartment air for days. At least he's left the Brussels sprouts alone.

Nemesis, that's actually a pretty good recipe for sprouts, in that the coating is so delicious and flavorful it almost covers up the rankness of the sprouts themselves.

Almost.

Nemesis--That looks good! I'll have to try it.

Moo--Ah, yes. You understand.

Lady Susan--Very sexy. There are sometimes very pretty, very well-dressed, very well-coiffed people in our gym. I don't really get that.

Sean--I sense that you do not feel the brussels sprouts love. Too bad. They're yummy AND so good for you.

I've hated Brussels sprouts since I was a baby. When Heidi published that recipe on 101cookbooks.com I decided to give them another whirl, since my tastes have certainly evolved since I was five years old (goodbye fish sticks; hel-LO broccoli!), but it was not to be. I'm sure anyone who likes sprouts will love that recipe, though.
