14 More Things about Me

Remember when we started this game with the narcissistic lists? We're going to play it some more.

1. I always pick the slowest line at the grocery store. Always. Doesn't matter if there's only one person in front of me, as soon as I get in the line, the cash register breaks, the person in front of me loses her wallet, and the cashier decides to show us all a slideshow of bears dressed like humans.

2. I've never had a broken bone.

3. I have no living grandparents.

4. Sometimes, for no particular reason, I like to kick. I picked this up from the Ceramic Genius.

5. I like watching live sports but TV sports bore me.

6. I don't like being looked at when I'm in a group, especially at events like white elephant parties, where everyone has to take a turn at something and I know that my turn is coming up and everyone will be watching me. Even if I'm friends with everyone in the group.

7. I like to read in every genre except for horror.

8. I once pretended to fall asleep so that a boy who was visiting me would go away.

9. Ankles remind me of anorexia. Elbows too.

10. I love to be AT the ocean but I don't like to be IN the ocean.

11. My grandma taught me to play poker.

12. When I was growing up, I was scared of my dolls.

13. I didn't get my first car until I was 24. It's the car I still drive.

14. I'd rather wash dishes by hand than put them in the dishwasher.

Five MORE Things About Me

Chou tagged me to write five things about myself. As I've demonstrated frequently, I don't mind talking about myself at all, so here goes.

1. I like to take the "secret slow way" when I drive. I think my sister coined this term. It means to take a back way that's not actually a shortcut. Taking the secret slow way is never faster than the direct route. I'd rather add 5-10 minutes to my route than drive on major roads.

2. I love the author bios in the back of books. I usually read them before I begin a book. If I don't, part way through the book I end up frantically leafing to the back to find out who came up with this and to determine if we would be friends.

3. I feel awkward on the phone. If I'm calling someone (even if I'm returning a call), I always (unless it's my mom) feel like I'm interrupting. You're probably thinking, erroneously, that if someone really doesn't want to talk, s/he won't answer the phone. I had to call someone to give him the address of a party once. I barely knew him, so there's no way he had my phone number in his phone. I call, I tell him I have the address, I start to give it to him. He stops me and says, "Could you call back in about an hour? I'm operating heavy machinery right now." Yeah. He was on a forklift. Why answer the phone? He didn't recognize the number, he couldn't really talk anyway, why not just let me leave a message? Why? Why?

4. I skip ahead in books. If I think something bad might happen or the plot becomes too intense, I skim the end of the book so that I know what's going to happen and can emotionally prepare myself. I even did this with the last Harry Potter book.

5. I dislike chain restaurants, and I love independent restaurants. I don't want food to taste the same and restaurant decor to be the same no matter where I go, and I'd rather support people who live in my state or in the community I'm visiting than a giant corporation. The single librarian posse went to a hip, independent place called Pizzeria 712 this weekend. The food was delicious (I had gouda, potato, rosemary pizza; a sweet potato, bacon, spinach, walnut, something or other dish; and panna cotta with berries), the restaurant uses sustainably produced foods when possible, and the prices were reasonable. I'm a big fan of all three of those things. If you live in Utah, go try it.

I'm supposed to tag five more people to write about themselves, but about half my blogging friends have recently been tagged to write variations of this tag and I suspect the other half of being too recalcitrant to comply if I chose them, so if you feel like writing about yourself, consider yourself tagged. Am I bad at this game? I think I am.

It's Always About Me

Last week Miss Nemesis, a brilliant blogger, posted something that fills a listmaker with joy. I am now stealing it (I also accidentally stole her box lunch last week--so sorry!) and shortening it a tiny bit because I'm going to have to go serve the hordes very, very soon.

3 things I was doing 10 years ago

1. Living in a dive where my roommates and I regularly broke things (not on purpose)--Amy kicked a hole in the wall, I broke the kitchen table in half, Amy and I broke our roommate's bed.

2. I had just accepted a job in BYU's Germanic and Slavic Department. It was a lovely job that I kept until I graduated. The professors were so kind to me, and one of the German TAs called me the Patron Saint of Teaching Assistants. A great job.

3. I was preparing to spend the coming summer in Russia on study abroad. A few days ago I found a survey that Amy and I made for the members of our study abroad prep class. It includes the following questions:

When mugged by Russian gypsies, you will
a) scream
b) give them money
c) ask them out
d) proselytize them

You are most like
a) a wild banshee
b) a hairy Ishmaelite
c) docile, demure, and domestic
d) heir(ess) to a throne
e) other, write a brief essy of explanation

How do you feel about flings? (We were pro-fling.)

3 things on my to-do list

1. Go to London over New Year's

2. Visit Rebekah the Abandoner in her new digs in D.C. (and my other friends in the D.C. area, but I haven't told them about that yet)

3. Get around to giving the Ceramic Genius her wedding gift. It's been sitting in my house for months.

3 things I'd do if I were a millionaire

1. T R A V E L

2. Buy my sister a new house with a mother-in-law apartment to use as a home base for my new life as a dilettante, criss-crossing the globe.

3. Be a giver.

3 favorite possessions

1. My winter coat. So pretty. So soft.

2. My cookie gun. Mostly just because I like to say, "Come on over. We'll have some kitchen fun with a cookie gun" (the slogan on the box).

3. Photographs.

5 things I've read recently

1. Iceberg - I read this for an adventure genre study at work. I chose a Clive Cussler because I can usually convince the boys in DT to read them, and the boys tell me afterwards that Dirk Pitt and the Clive Cussler books are "tight." I thought it was okay.

2. Talking with My Mouth Full by Bonny Wolf - VERY reminiscent of Laurie Colwin's food essays. That's a huge compliment. I ADORE Laurie Colwin.

3. Mollie Katzen's The Vegetable Dishes I Can't Live Without

4. Big Fat Little Lit - for a graphic novel genre study

5. Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Lives from the StoryCorps Project - I love this book. It makes me want to cry for the sheer goodness of other people.

21 MORE Things About Me

I'm too tired today. It's always easy to come up with a list, though, so here's the continuation of 21 Things About Me. Someday I'll make it to 100 and then won't we all be happy and fulfilled as human beings? Yes. Yes, we will. But we won't be able to play two truths and a lie together.

1. I'm not a good bike rider.

2. After I read about 50 billion books about blind kids in grade school, I sent away for a card with the Braille alphabet so I could prepare in case I was suddenly struck blind. I practiced punching out "braille" with a needle on an index card. Mostly I practiced writing the name Melinda, because that's what I wanted my name to be if I became blind.

3. My radio is tuned to KUER.

4. My hair has never been colored, permed, or in any way chemically altered.

5. I studied Russian for several years in college and studied IN Russia one summer, but the only Russian that still easily rolls off my tongue is the sentence It depends on what you want to eat.

6. I'm the youngest child in my family.

7. The book that made me decide to be a librarian is Do They Hear You When You Cry? (If you plan to read it, be aware that it goes on a little too long.)

8. I own 5 DVDs. They were all gifts.

9. I like Thanksgiving leftovers better than Thanksgiving dinner.

10. I stopped drinking carbonation when I was 12.

11. My favorite Hamburger is the Hire's Big H.

12. I love airports.

13. I hate gum.

14. Modern dance is my favorite form of dance. I took a class in college and choreographed a dance about my Russian textbook.

15. I never reveal who I vote for in elections.

16. I love movie trailers. Sometimes I check out movies from the library, watch the trailers, and return them.

17. My favorite game to play with a group is The Great Dalmuti.

18. In the last 5 years, I've moved at least once every year.

19. My greataunt calls my eyes gander blue, because, apparently, they're a very specific shade of blue.

20. I've never taken a geography class and it shows.

21. Good punctuation makes me swoon. Funny, since I'm not a good punctuater myself.

21 Things About Me

Yesterday on my friend Rebekah's blog, I discovered her list of 100 things about herself. The listmaker inside of me gave a little scream of glee, and I KNEW what I would be inflicting on you all today. I'd link you to Rebekah's blog so you could see what a rock star she is, but she works in a volatile field (read: she gets death threats), so her blog's top secret at the moment. So, let's talk about me (not that that's different from every other day on this blog).

1--I love this quote from Horseradish, the new Lemony Snicket book (haven't actually read the book): If you are allergic to a thing, it is best not to put that thing in your mouth, particularly if the thing is cats. Makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.

2--Fall is my favorite season.

3--I don’t like to turn on lights when I’m not going to stay in a room. I’m always bumping into things and banging up my shins because I’m just running into a room to grab something, without turning on the light.

4--Approximately half of my wardrobe was purchased at thrift stores/rummage sales.

5--When I was a little girl, I made my mom tie a rope around my waist and lead me on walks. My sister was embarrassed to be seen with me, because she thought people would think I was a special child the family kept in the basement. (My sister was a teenager and I was marmot aged.)

6--Elbows creep me out.

7--If I’m on a walk and I get to an intersection and cars are coming, I bend down and pretend to tie my shoe so that the cars won’t stop for me. If I'm not wearing shoes with laces, I pretend there's a rock in my shoe.

8--My favorite color is blue.

9--I don’t like waking up to an alarm clock.

10--Babies in snowsuits make me happy.

11--I won a story contest at my public library in the first grade, and the book I wrote and illustrated is still in that library. You can check it out!

12--I love wearing boots.

13--I still have three of my wisdom teeth.

14--I don’t like making phone calls.

15--My favorite poem is Saint Judas by James Wright.

16--I can’t punctuate. In college I used to send my papers to my sister to correct, and she always had less than flattering things to say about my comma usage. Some of us have a guiding, inner punctuation light that doesn’t necessarily conform to standard punctuation rules.

17--I didn’t learn how to use a curling iron until I was in college.

18--When I decided to learn how to make pie, I made a pie every day for a week, including a chess pie that has gone down in history as the “rice pie,” and which I had to pry away from Emily and beg her to stop eating because she’ll eat terrible food just to keep people from feeling bad.

19--I used to work in a jail.

20—When I was a little girl, I quizzed my mom about whether sisters were closer or parents and children were closer, because I wanted to make sure my sister didn’t grow up and have little children that she (my sister) liked better than she liked me.

21--I think little boys should be required to wear uniforms and all babies should wear hats.

Little school boys in the British Museum last fall. They were everywhere! It was fantastic. Look at those knees!
